Big data is revolutionising health care research and has the potential to improve outcomes for patients. The IMI Big Data for Better Outcomes (BD4BO) programme is aiming to enable the use of big data to improve health outcomes in Europe. This includes the standardisation or harmonisation of outcome data that is collected to reduce the high levels of variation within and between different types of data sources (i.e. trials, electronic health records, registries, etc) and across Europe. Developing and applying minimum or core outcome sets (COS) can ensure outcomes are appropriate to all stakeholders, as well as enable combining of datasets and comparative research.
